      • I touched the walls of my elementary school today.
      • So much time gone by?
      • Bricks and lessons worn, but feeling strong as ever.
      • I see the dirt path in the hill where we played and slid.
      • Into the painful lessons of fate.
      • Invisible to others.
      • Racing down the halls breaking the rules.
      • Falling through the window of my classroom door.
      • Scars now a less sensitive reminder.
      • I can't go back.
      • I can't go in.
      • Did we ever leave?
      For me, January is a month of reflection. It is a time of both nostalgia and anticipation. I think about the year and years gone by and consider my plans and resolutions for those ahead. It's a time for memories and dreams, recognizing the former is an imperfect constructive representation of a past reality in the mind (Knowledge and the Reliability of Constructive Memory. Zacks JM, Bezdek MA, Cunningham GE. Memory. 2022 Jan; 30 (1):22–25) and the latter may seem just as real. Now is a time to ponder the question, “What is the difference between artificial and real?”
